Red Light Therapy, Laser, Ultrasound, High Frequency, Microneedling, Are High Energy Based Skin Treatments. But What Are They For Skin?

In recent years, the beauty industry has seen a remarkable shift toward energy-based skin treatments. If you’re aiming for a firmer jawline or lifted cheeks without surgery, these options might be just what you need. Devices like Morpheus8 and Ultherapy promise results similar to surgical procedures but often require less recovery time. Other energy based procedures to know about are Ultrasound, High Frequency, Microcurrent and Light treatments.

However, with these treatments gaining popularity, questions about their effectiveness and safety are rising. Full disclosure I am not a fan of the more aggressive and deeper procedures because they can do irreversible damage to our fat under our skin creating a hollowed out look when not done correctly which makes us look older.

Understanding Energy-Based Skin Treatments

Energy-based skin treatments use various energy forms—like ultrasound, radiofrequency, or red light therapy—to invigorate the skin's natural healing processes. These techniques promote collagen production, tighten the skin, and enhance overall texture and tone. Let's explore energy based treatments that promote active change for our skin to generate more collagen and tighten.

Types of Energy-Based Treatments

  1. Ultrasound Treatments:

Focused Ultrasound is a standout method. This treatment sends concentrated ultrasound energy deep into the skin layers, encouraging collagen regeneration. Research shows patients typically experience a 20-30% improvement in skin elasticity, making it effective for tightening sagging skin and reducing fine lines. It also restores your glow! Is there a risk? No and is even more effective after a mild Peel, with Light, Microneedling and High Frequency for safe yet collagen stimulating and tightening of the skin.

  2. High Frequency function by using a glass high frequency electrode to treat various contours of the face and body. When applied to the surface of the skin, a mild electrical current passes through the neon, or argon gas filled glass electrode, causing it to emit a subtle glow and buzzing noise. Enriched oxygen molecules are produced that create an anti-bacterial action and a “natural” thermal tissue warming. This reaction helps your blood vessels push away toxins, while the cells in your skin are enriched with nutrients and hydrating volume. This in turn creates an increase in blood circulation and cell renewal that supports increased levels of collagen and elastin. The skin is left feeling instantly energized and noticeably softer after just one treatment. It takes a series of 5-6 for optimum results and can be done with other procedures like Ultrasound and Light and has no risk.

  3. Microneedling without or with Ultrasound:

This advanced technique blends traditional microneedling with Ultrasound energy. Small needles create micro-injuries, followed with Ultrasound delivering energy to boost collagen and elastin production. According to patient surveys, 75% reported noticeable skin texture improvement within a few months. Note Microneedling can be used alone but is more effective with Ultrasound, Light or High Frequency!

  1. Microcurrent

These treatments use low-level electrical currents to stimulate facial muscles and enhance cellular activity, leading to a more toned, lifted, and rejuvenated appearance. The electrical impulses mimic the body's natural electrical signals, promoting muscle contraction, increased ATP production, and collagen synthesis. These need to be done multiple times and are very safe.

  2. Light Therapy

Red Light offers firming and stimulates collagen while blue light is for acne and inflammation. Let's focus on aging here. Aging is all about the body's metabolic process slowing down, leading to wrinkles, joint pain, and other signs of aging. LED light therapy emits red and near-infrared light stimulating fibroblast cells and boosting the production of collagen and elastin, the building blocks of our body's skin, joints, ligaments. The skin is very responsive to red light therapy to tighten and smooth! Add it to any facial for best results.

How Do These Treatments Work?

Energy-based skin treatments operate on the principle of controlled damage. By delivering targeted energy to the skin:

  • Collagen Production: Energy stimulates fibroblasts responsible for collagen and elastin creation, resulting in firmer, more youthful skin.

  • Tissue Remodeling: The natural healing process remodels the tissue, enhancing skin texture and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Minimal Downtime: These treatments are generally non-invasive or minimally invasive. Most patients can resume daily activities right after treatment.

The Appeal of Energy-Based Treatments

The growing interest in energy-based skin treatments stems from several appealing factors:

Non-Invasiveness

The thought of surgical facelift procedures can be intimidating. Energy-based treatments offer a less invasive route with similar benefits, making them attractive to many.

Quick Results

Many treatments provide visible improvements almost immediately, with continued collagen production leading to further enhancements over the following months. I highly recommend 5-6 treatments.

Little to No Downtime

Patients often can dive back into their routines the same or next day, making these solutions particularly well-suited for busy lifestyles.

Customizable Options

Estheticians can tailor treatments to each individual’s unique skin concerns, offering a personalized approach that maximizes results.

A Cautionary Note for Deeper Treatments

While the potential benefits are enticing, caution is essential when considering deeper treatments.

Risks Associated with Energy-Based Treatments

With the rise in popularity comes a surge in improperly executed procedures. Dr. Sean Alemi, a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, frequently deals with patients affected by poorly administered treatments that affect skin deeper like Morpheous8 and Microneedling RF or Thermage.

  • Aging Effects: Over-treatment can lead to prematurely aged skin, increasing the likelihood of needing surgical options sooner than expected.

  • Skin Texture Changes: Some patients may encounter unexpected changes in skin texture or fat loss, compromising their aesthetic results.

  • Not a Substitute: Many people mistakenly believe these treatments can replace traditional facelifts. While they offer improvements, they don’t deliver the same outcomes as surgery. Personally I won't ever be getting a facelift and will do a combination of these treatments for my ageless journey!

Social Media and the Beauty Pressure

The pervasive influence of social media amplifies the pressure to maintain flawless skin. According to Dr. Alemi, the obsession with prevention often leads women to seek treatments at younger ages, which might ironically accelerate the aging process.

The Role of Weight Changes

Emerging weight loss trends, have led to significant volume loss in the face for many. This change can increase the desire for tightening treatments, as individuals may perceive their appearance differently.

Selection and Aftercare

If you’re considering energy-based skin treatments, prioritizing safety and efficacy is key:

Choose a Qualified Provider

Selecting a skilled practitioner experienced in energy-based treatments is crucial. Investigating credentials and reading reviews can help guide your decision.

Understand Expectations

Set realistic goals regarding the results. Discuss potential side effects and the possibility of multiple sessions with your practitioner.

Follow Aftercare Guidelines

Post-treatment care is essential for optimal results. Follow your practitioner’s aftercare instructions carefully to achieve the best possible outcome. Your skincare will be most crucial at this point.

Final Thoughts

Energy-based skin treatments offer promising options for those seeking non-invasive solutions to combat skin aging. However, caution is necessary, as understanding potential risks and choosing qualified professionals will help ensure treatments align with your desired outcomes. The skincare you use at home will maintain your skin between treatments and beyond.

As beauty standards change and technology develops, it’s important to prioritize health and well-being over drastic measures. Taking the time to research and consult can lead to a more rewarding skincare journey.

In a world bursting with trends and quick-fix solutions, it is still valuable to embrace patience and self-care. Though I love laser to correct dark spots and hair removal I am skeptical for anything that penetrates deeply to affect my facial fat (we need that). With so many choices whether you’re exploring energy treatments for the first time or weighing your options, a well-informed decision can help you achieve the radiant, improved tightening of the skin you desire while avoiding the pitfalls that can come with rushed treatments.
