Face Masking Mania: Breaking Down Masking At-Home

Have you noticed that skincare masks are everywhere lately? It’s as if the beauty world has sparked a masking frenzy! If you've wandered through the beauty aisles recently, you might feel a little lost amid the choices. Today, you can pamper almost every part of your body with specialized masks—from hydrating your hair to treating your feet. There are even masks designed for your neck and under-eye areas.

The global face mask market is a booming $12 billion industry. This surge reflects the growing interest in at-home skincare. With so many options available, how do you choose which mask is appropriate for your skin? If you love to mask, you’re in for a treat! This article will guide you through the essentials of at-home masking so you can elevate your skincare routine.

Why Masks?

Masks are more than just a passing trend; they are an essential part of skincare routines around the world. Unlike regular moisturizers or serums that you use every day, masks deliver an intense dose of ingredients to target specific skin issues. For example, a hydrating mask can increase skin moisture by up to 40% after just one use. Whether you're battling dryness, acne, or oiliness, there is a mask tailor-made for your needs. Everyone loves that instant glow!

Your daily routine keeps your skin hydrated, but masks can act as a booster, like a mini spa day at home. They can retexture your skin, brighten up a dull complexion, and provide a soothing effect. After a good mask, you’ll feel ready to face whatever the day throws at you.

Types of Masks

When you jump into the world of masks, you'll encounter various types, each designed for different purposes. Knowing the specifics can help you choose the perfect mask for your skin. Here are some of the most popular types:

Face Masking Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are a worldwide favorite for a good reason. Made from fabric or synthetic material soaked in serums, they are incredibly easy to use. Just place the mask on your face for about 20 minutes and let it work its magic. They address concerns like dryness and dullness while delivering hydration and essential nutrients directly to your skin. Be sure to read your ingredients!

Clay Masks

For those with thicker skin, oily skin or acne-prone skin, and even rough skin or want ageless masking, clay masks can be a game changer. They absorb extra oil and draw out impurities, helping to reduce breakouts, even exfoliate the upper layers...with the right mask. But, when partnered with ingredients like raspberries, blueberries, Coq10 and vitamins these masks become very nourishing to all skin types! In fact, a study found that using clay masks can reduce acne lesions by 30% in just a week or improve any skin texture almost immediately. These are also great for combination and dry skin depending on the ingredients. If you struggle with problematic areas, whether it's dry rough skin or oily this type of mask is worth trying.

Cream Masks (my favorite)

Cream masks are known for their rich textures, providing deep hydration, especially beneficial for dry or sensitive skin. Many include ingredients like hyaluronic acid or natural oils, which can boost moisture levels and leave your skin feeling soft and nourished. Compared to regular moisturizers, they can enhance hydration levels by up to 50%. But these are not just for dry skin but dehydrated skin. Did you know an oily or combination skin can be dehydrated?

Pro Tip: If you have dry spots with an oily or clogged t-zone use a clay mask in this area and a creamy hydrating mask everywhere else, all at once!

Peel-off Masks

Peel-off masks provide a satisfying experience. You apply the product as a liquid-cream, and once it dries, you peel it off, revealing smoother skin. They are excellent for removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores, making them a satisfying choice for something different. These are my least favorite as they aren't absorbed into the skin like the others. These are designed to separate from skin to lift off so they stop short. I also don't use these in my practice with gauze as they definitely don't absorb into the skin with gauze blocking the way.

Overnight Masks

For busy lifestyles, overnight masks come to the rescue. You apply them before bed and wake up to refreshed skin. These masks often contain rejuvenating ingredients that help repair your skin while you sleep, making them an effortless addition to your routine. These are generally creamy and skin slowly absorbs them efficiently. I suggest our Luxe Hydra Drench Mask when you want to give your skin a break from retinol or over the top of your retinol. Skin needs a switch up every now and then for a rest. Try 1 night a week.

How to Use Masks Effectively

To enjoy the full benefits of your masks, follow these straightforward guidelines:

  1. Start with Clean Skin: Always wash your face before using a mask. This ensures that the mask's active ingredients can penetrate effectively.

  2. Read Instructions Carefully: Each mask has specific application times. Following the instructions can significantly enhance results.

  3. Use Regularly: Consider your skin type when integrating masks into your routine. For example, many people use sheet masks two to three times a week, while clay masks might be ideal once a week or every other week. Don't know? Consult with me for free.

  4. Combine with Other Products: Feel free to use your daily skincare products alongside masks. For example, apply a moisturizer after a clay mask to lock in moisture or add a serum to your mask.

  5. Don't Overdo It: It can be tempting to try every mask you see, but moderation is key. Using too many masks can irritate your skin and lead to redness and/or breakouts. Here is the proper order for Face It Skin masks:

Glow Mask digs out blackheads, gently exfoliates, Raspberry Clay Mask (all skin) retexturizes and softens OR Turmeric Clay Mask (oily) to absorb oil and unclog, Oxygen Peel nourishes and exfoliates deeper for ageless aging and lastly Hydra Drench for comforting, repairing and deeply hydrate.

Final Thoughts

I've outlined some biological and chemical reasons why everyone should indulge in masks from head to toe, but what about our emotional well-being? Can taking the time to enjoy a face or foot mask of grit, clay, or serum be beneficial?

In today's fast-paced world, self-care has become essential for our emotional survival. We constantly try to keep up with friends or neighbors, our lives are exposed on social media, and we face an overwhelming number of choices and decisions about our future, leaving our mind, body, and soul utterly exhausted. So I say to you, slow it down. No more comparing and stop scrolling and do some selfcare. Do what works for you and know an expert or line you can trust. Masks in general do more for you than just the science on the skin. They enable you to sit, lay, rest and mediate. Masks allow the mind to slip into a place of simply breathing and being.

With countless options at your fingertips, it’s easier than ever to find a mask tailored to your specific skin needs—whether it's dryness, acne, or signs of aging. But, narrow it down and use masks you know you can trust.

Masks are a fun way to enhance your skincare routine and deliver noticeable results. So, indulge in that peaceful moment of masking—your skin will appreciate it! Whether you opt for a rich clay mask or a refreshing sheet mask, there’s a perfect solution for every skin type. Embrace the masking mania, buy the mask and let your skin shine!
